Testimonials

With a laid-back bohemian vibe, and an utterly unmatchable atmosphere, this urban beauty in the west of Ireland will charm you…. Dublin won’t like it and nor will Cork, but Galway could surpass them both as the home of Ireland’s destination marathon…While the running was good, it was the pre-and post-race atmosphere that will stick in the memory…. In Galway they don’t need much of an excuse to throw a party. The challenge is to wait until after you’ve run the marathon.

Operation Transformation Leader in Mini Marathon

Ronan Scully and other participants in RTE’s Operation Transformation programme will take part in the Mini Marathon at the 2011 Galway City Marathon races.

Ronan starred in the fourth season of RTE’s Operation Transformation, which is an eight week regime of diet, exercise and positive living that is aimed at giving everyone a fresh start and positive outlook on life. He applied himself rigorously and lost a total of 26 lbs (11.8kgs) over the eight weeks.

Following Operation Transformation, Ronan continued his programme of exercise and diet and successfully completed the North Pole Marathon in April. Ronan is now inviting people to invest in their own health and join him in the 10km mini marathon. In doing so, they can also raise money for charity simultaneously.

Ronan said, “I accomplished a lot over the eight weeks of Operation Transformation and I want to help provide a focus for others to do something similar in the weeks leading up to the Galway City Marathon. In addition, we can hopefully raise some funds for charity in the process”. He will be supporting Self Help Africa which works at grassroots level in nine African countries, tackling poverty and improving the lives of local communities. Ronan will be joined by fellow Operation Transformation leader, Sinead Heffernan, from Enfield, Co Meath and by Dr Eddie Murphy, one of the expert team members form the show.

The Galway City Marathon organisers are supporting Ronan’s effort to fundraise by providing a mechanism for participants to register for the mini-marathon and to select a charity to support. The Galway City Marathon website provides a list of supported charities.

Ronan says “If you just need some focus and some help to get out and get fit, then this is a great opportunity for you. We’re going to provide some training plans and are offering some master classes along the way to assist everyone in achieving their goal. The beauty of the Galway City Marathon is that you have a choice of events in which to run as there is a marathon and half-marathon in addition to the 10 km mini-marathon. The absolute novice will be able to complete the mini-marathon with a fews weeks build-up”.
